The UFO is a vehicle in Ravenfield.

Characteristics[]

The UFO is an extremely agile and durable "vehicle" that cannot actually be controlled by soldiers. It spawns as part of a special event which can be triggered by the player. It is capable of omnidirectional movement at high velocities and cannot be harmed by most damage sources.

The vehicle is equipped with a Pulse Gun that rapidly fires energy bolts, doing moderate splash damage to all nearby targets. It will also attempt to abduct infantry units with its Tractor Beam. In addition to this, the UFO kills all infantry units on contact.

Event Locations[]

The UFO Event must be triggered manually by the player's actions. To start the process, a hint is offered in the game's roadmap section.

"We have received reports of the crash of an unidentified aircraft South of the Temple. We would like you to investigate this area for any recoverable parts of the craft. Keep your distance from any debris you find – and definitely do not kick it!"

True to the message, a wrecked UFO can be found on Temple, nestled between the peaks far to the southeast, beyond the Minimap's visual boundary. As the player approaches it, strange sounds will start playing in the background. If the player climbs onto the UFO and kicks the dome, the wreck will scream and generate a permanent damage zone that does 15 DPS. This property doesn't persist between matches, but can be re-triggered indefinitely.

After the wreck is kicked, the mobile UFO will spawn in the sky and attack all units of either team on any map. It will continue its behavior in every match until it is destroyed or until the game is restarted. It can be spawned again with the same method at any time once per match, potentially resulting in multiple UFOs stacking with each other.

The only means of damaging the UFO is with the Railgun. If the item is not already in the player's inventory, they must acquire it by fulfilling its own unlocking event, which happens to require the by-now aggravating UFO pest for the process.

Static UFO[]

In some maps such as Archipelago (night only), the static UFO may appear on the map at a specified location. The non-Temple UFOs are entirely passive and does nothing when kicked. The UFO prop is also available in the Map Editor, and so is by now a common sight in custom maps.

UFO "Spam"[]

In some cases, multiple simultaneous UFOs may spawn uninvited to ruin the player's day. This is an anti-piracy feature designed to kick in if the game is not launched legitimately. Combined with the nonfunctional pirated railgun, a relentless UFO army will simply steamroll everything.

There are several simultaneous checks that the game would perform so as not to erroneously punish a legit user, which proved prone to backfiring. Later on, the Anti-piracy feature was removed at an unknown version, precluding further UFO swarms.

Trivia[]

  • The UFO is technically not controlled by a bot, as when the player is killed by its attacks, the game will say "Oopsie..." instead of the regular death message.
